Wanting to save my daughters or the world: SukaSuka first impression

Wow, this anime has the longest title going this season; Shūmatsu Nani Shitemasu ka? Isogashii Desu ka? Sukutte Moratte Ii Desu ka?. Which translates to as: WorldEnd: What are you doing at the end of the world? Are you busy? Will you save us?. Thankfully there is a shorter name for it – SukaSuka.

SukaSuka follows the story of the last human – Willem Kmetsch. Human beings have been wiped all but out 500 years ago. From these ‘beasts’. The surviving race have all but moved to the sky. Willem being the only surviving human has used a powerful weapon called a dug weapon to fight these beasts. These weapons have taken their toll on his body, to the point where he can no longer be tasked to be on the front lines.

Being a high-ranking officer in the military he has been re-assigned to a orphange – which is a military facility helping to develop the next soldiers – who are cute little girls – who aren’t really little girls – but are in fact leprechaun’s.

Willem meets two female characters; Nygglatho – a troll who has a liking to Willem’ flesh. She is also the caretaker to the girls in the orphanage. And Chtholly. The main female lead and is a 15-year-old fairy. Who also wields a dug weapon.

How will Willem handle these girls and how will they take to him?.

Straight off the bat, the art in the first episode is just gorgeous. I mean they had Scarborough Fairfax sung in the first episode!. I really enjoyed that rendition.

The story is told from Willem’ perspective. As the only male, the girls have taken to him as a father figure. Being unable to fight in their stead, Willem can only watch as his now adoptive daughters are shipped off to fight, in to what looks like a unwinable war.

I really like that perspective. It tells the story of how helpless one can be, just because the ones they love are destined to fight – not knowing if they will ever come back. I do think Chtholly’ feelings for Willem is more like father and daughter, and not what it is implied – that being a romantic one. Just to point out, Willem himself was a father. He had a daughter.

The interactions with the girls is just great, at first they weren’t sure of how he is. But take to him and he to them warmly. Nygglatho interactions with him is great, not only does she want to eat him <comically>, what really is interesting is that they both see the girls as their daughters.

The pacing is slow, but that’s what makes the anime what it is.

For me, the first impression of this anime:

Overall impression: V. Good

  1. I’m still not sure about this one. First episode was great but since then for everything I like about the show, there’s something else that I just wish wasn’t there so while I’m enjoying it, I’m still not sure overall how I feel about it. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

  2. Hmm, this storyline sounds really interesting. I really like post apocalyptic movies/series in general, and that’s why I really need to check this one out. (Only problem is lack of time lol 😂). Still, I have written this one dien, to check it out ASAP. Thanks for sharing this one 😀
