Spring / Summer first impression: New Game!

Game on!!!!. What do you get if you get a cute character, throw her in to an office environment – a particular one that does video games and follow her antics?. Oh and put it in anime format. Well you’d get something that is something similar to Shirobako.

>> And considering the type of game Eagle Jump is depicted in creating. It wouldn’t be that hard in to not comparing the two. Since most JRPG & anime are interlinked << that’s just a side note.

The series follows Aoba Suzukaze, a new employee at Eagle Jump. What I liked about the first episode is that where Shirobako didn’t quite nail the whole ‘newbie employee‘ feel to it with Aoi Miyamori – however new game did. And boy do they tell it. Aoba like anyone starting out at their first job would be incredibly nervous, awkward, shy, unsure. The depiction is done really well. And it captures her feelings as she meets her co-workers / friends. Something to which I’m sure anyone can relate to.

New game is essential a cute version of Shirobako. Whilst Shirobako focused on a more mature approach in terms of it’s presentation – not withstanding it’s own cuteness – new game does the opposite. It doesn’t try to hide the cuteness. If anything, it does it so blatantly. And it’s not that bad. However the office workers are slightly over exaggerated. Far too many “nice” people – which we all know in real life that isn’t the case. Something which Shirobako “tried” to address.

There is something that I will say – Eagle Jump is predominately an all female company (from the off set). It is well known that the video game industry is male dominated. Females in general get a fair bit of flack in this industry. So it doesn’t help when women like Anita Sarkeesian is bashing the video game industry. Which does nothing but fuels boys / men that aren’t interacting with the opposite gender with more caution. As they see video games as a way of escapism.

For me, this anime is a:

Priority: Medium – High

  1. People who dislike this show must have no heart! “Not interesting” should be more proper term 🙂 From the first ep I think it’s my slice-of-life of the season.

    1. It gives a very good insight in to the world of video games. So I’m bit perplexed as to why they say “not interesting”.
