Attack on titan meets the walking dead. Or if you’re a George A Romero fan; night of the living dead. That is how I can summarize this show. The only major difference is this show is set in the industrial revolution era. Since I’ve mentioned AoT. Yes you’ve guessed it, it’s done by Wit Studio. Yet another dystopian, apocalyptic world. Where some thing is oppressing the human race. Who have built walls to keep out the big mean.
Kanaberi of the iron fortress doesn’t have shape-shifting, deformed titans that eat humans, or vampires that feed on humans, by the way them vampires will fit right in with the twilight saga (Ferid sparkles with joy by the way). Me and Judge are still waiting for that promised cosplay of Skul / Trepe Taku ;P. Anyway.. this time it’s…zombies (dead, pun intended give away at the beginning). The only way to kill these zombies; is a strong strike at the heart. The heart is encased in iron. So it makes them pretty tough to beat. Once bitten you become a Kabane.
Ikoma pretty much follows the other shows that Wit studio have pumped out. An angsty, determined male lead. And…he is also a half-human. A Kabaneri. Pretty formulaic if you ask me. However the show has maintained my interest. Unlike the last offering Wit gave out. Ayame is quickly becoming my favourite character, and she hasn’t done much. The major difference here is that the populace travel around via a heavily armoured train. That doesn’t mean its invincible. Kabane attack it frequently, in hopes of getting their daily feed. And infecting others. Whether it is in the train or in the small villages.
Also the stations are walled off. In keeping out the Kabane. Sound familiar?.
If you like a mature show with sprinkles of what Wit usually offers then this show is pretty good.
For me, this anime is a:
