Spring / Summer first impression: Sailor Moon Crystal (S3)

As the heading image shows, it’s a dead give away as to what the 3rd season of Sailor moon crystal is all about. Now granted the 3rd season was never aired in the UK. For those countries that were fortunate enough to have it aired, will undoubtedly remember that particular arc with nostalgic memories.

The first two series were marred with; bad pacing, plot, stiff character development and directing. The CGI transformation of our favourite sailor scouts just looked….. plastic. To boot, everyone saw the reboot as nothing more of a cash grab. To note that’s what the general feeling is. Personally I didn’t mind the first 2 series. Comparing it to memories of yore…isn’t my thing.

So it is understandable that most will have gone in with this series with low level of expectation. I, on the other hand went in with intrigue. And I have to say, this is a major improvement from the first 2. The biggest change of all is; the girls transformation. It’s now pure art. Not some cheap, tacky CGI transformation. The story telling from the first 3 episodes, are far better. It’s more fluid and more importantly it doesn’t drag things out. We’re already introduced to the 2 outer senshi. And they’ve made their mark on the girls…well more so by Haruka.

For me, this anime is a:

Priority: High
